On the beach (re-visited)

Just a short post. Am still trying to figure out what's really going on with all this military prodding and provocation over on the other side of the equator (which isn't much of one .. heh. Nobody on this side of it has much in the way of "military muscle" to 'counter' it or 'balance the equation').

'Tis well to remember -

The poster from the movie "On the Beach" 1959, (based on the novel by Nevil Shute)  for those youngsters who have never heard of it.
The residents of Australia after a global nuclear war must come to terms with the fact that all life will be destroyed in a matter of months.
Would be nice to believe that any nuke stuff (if it happens) would stay where it belongs - northern hemisphere - but too much to expect, i guess.

Saw the modern version of this with Bryan Brown in it, wasn't too bad. He ends up taking a Ferrari to Phillip Island and punting it through a strategically placed billboard.

Everyone else gets pills from the gumbymint. Blue ones for the kiddies and white ones for grown ups (or somesuch). Then they can top themselves painlessly.

The submarine mission to the frozen north is a flop because the mysterious broadcast about whales comes from a corpse sitting at a desk with a laptop powered by a small solar panel which is hit by the sun at a certain time each day. Talk about suspension of disbelief!

No sense losing any sleep over it. If the nutters (on either side!) launch then there ain't a damn thing you can do about it. Could be a considerable relief for many over leveraged home "owners" ;-)

Too true, lemmi. Have to say that am getting close to the proverbial 'threescore and ten' so doesn't worry me much. 'Tis a bit sad though; those who disregard history are bound to repeat it (or some such).

Um, haven't seen the Bryan B. version, sounds silly, as most of the "re-makes" tend to be.

Was hoping that the "MAD" doctrine had been quietly parked, and forgotten; but seems not. Desperate Nations do desperate things. At this point the chinese aren't doing anything silly (relatively speaking).
